N.Y. Secretary of State Pushes for Legalization
Feb 17th
New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez wrote a well-reasoned editorial in the Albany Times Union supporting the Governor’s push for the legalization of mma in the state. She reiterates the oft-stated but still very compelling points that mma could be a financial boon to the state, while being regulated in a responsible way as a “fair and disciplined bona-fide athletic competition.” She goes on to say that “[A] goal of legalizing MMA is to cut down on the number of poorly regulated or unregulated knockoffs that put unlicensed, unprepared individuals in harm’s way.” Encouraging.

Good Weekend for New York Fighters
Feb 8th
Fighters from Team Bombsquad from Cortland and East West Combat from Syracuse both had successful trips down to the PA Championships in Harrisburg, PA this weekend. Despite being delayed a day due to the snowstorm that swept across the east coast, they walked away with three wins and one loss for the day. Mike Winters and Kenny Foster from the Bombsquad won split decisions, and Marc Gervais from East West Combat took home a victory by way of rear naked choke. The lone loss was Mike Geurin from the Bombsquad who was submitted by RNC. Unfortunately, Pat Bennett, the Bombsquad heavyweight from Syracuse, was unable to compete as his opponent was a no-show. As previously reported, Bombsquad’s Don Carlo-Clauss also walked away with a victory at XCFL this weekend, as did Matt Serra making it a good weekend for New York Fighters.
Matt Serra wins wins with his hands… again!
Feb 7th
Matt Serra finished off Frank Trigg with a hard right follwed by some ground and pound. According to Serra’s team, “the old Matt is back”. Matt playfully threw a right hand as he walked on stage at the weigh ins signifying his relaxed attitude. If there’s anything that describes Matt it’s: no fear. He’s as cool as a cucumber! That must be unsettling for his opponents. Matt is a force to be reckoned with. Unlike the other Matt, he doesn’t have any limits on who he will fight. You get the feeling Matt is saying to the world “bring it on. I’ll take whatever and whoever you through at me!”
Rolles Gracie loses in his octagon debut
Feb 7th
They say you revert to what you know best when you’re under pressure. Rolles seemed to support that belief with his many attempts at takedowns during the bout. Obviously, he is most comfortable on the ground, which is where all of his mma wins have occured. Unfortunately, on this day, it was not to be. The many failed takedown attempts resulted in Rolles absorbing too many strikes. We know that wasn’t his plan but plans sometimes go out the window in pressure situations. He is a Gracie and and according to Renzo, he will be back. We believe it.

Congratulations to Don Carlo Clauss!
Feb 7th
Don puts himself in the mix for the big shows with a win over Calvin Kattar. Great job Don. The tough training at the Bombsquad is paying off for you too.
