New York Fighters at Combat Zone event this weekend in New Hampshire

Pat McGreal and Al-Jamain Sterling will be fighting Saturday at the Combat Zone 33, Massacre in the Meadow in Gilford, New Hampshire. Pat, who hails from Boston but currently trains at the Bombsquad in Cortland, will be making his return to fighting after a two year hiatus. He faces Bobby Reardanz from Illinois. Al-Jamain will be competing for the second time in a week having just fought and won at Downtown Beatdown in Erie, Pennsylvania last weekend.

Jon Jones Fight Moved to San Diego – UFC Cancels Salt Lake City Fight

The UFC pulled out of Salt Lake City today and have decided to hold the event in San Diego, according to numerous reports. Poor ticket sales, attributed to holding an event on a Sunday in the heavily Mormon influenced city, were said to be the cause. New Yorker Jon Jones and New Jersey’s Mike Massenzio, who is training in New York for his upcoming fight with Brian Stann at the Bombsquad, will now be doing their thing in San Diego. Tickets go on sale Friday. Macs MMA New York will be there as usual!

Phil Baroni Back In Action at UFC 118

Phil Baroni will be returning to the octagon at UFC 118 in Boston, Masachusetts. The veteran fighter will be facing John Salter from Alabama who is coming off a TKO victory over Jason MacDonald at UFC 113. Baroni, on the other hand, is on a two fight losing streak having dropped fights to Joe Riggs and most recently TUF alum Amir Sadullah in a slugfest at UFC 106. This is a must win for the New Yorker who will return to fighting at 185 lbs.

Matt Hamill Returns to Octagon

Matt Hamill will be returning to the Octagon when he faces Keith Jardine at the Ultimate Fighter Finale on June 19th in Las Vegas. This will be Matt’s first fight since the controversial DQ win against Jon Jones back in December, so Matt will surely be looking to make a statement that he’s still a force in the 205 division. This should be a good fight as it will pit Matt’s superior wrestling against Jardine’s awkward but effective striking. Also, stay tuned for the release of the “Hammer’s” new movie which was filmed mostly in upstate New York. Mac’s MMA had the opportunity to be on set for several days of the shoot and it looks like it will be a great film. See you all in Vegas on the 19th!

Roger Gracie Facing Randleman at May 15 Strikeforce Event

Roger Gracie will be making his Strikeforce debut May 15 in St. Louis where he will meet former UFC heavyweight champ Kevin Randleman. Gracie, not surprisingly, is a world-class jiu jitsu practitioner who won the 2005 Open Class division at the renowned Abu Dhabi World Championsips. He also holds a 2-0 mma record though he has not fought since May of 2008 due in part to injuries. Randleman, a decorated Division 1 wrestler with back to back titles at Ohio State, has been in the sport since 1996 and currently holds an mma record of 17 wins and 14 losses. His last win was against Ryo Kawamura at Sengoku 2 in 2008. Should be an interesting fight.

Jon Jones Takes Another Step Closer With Win

Jon “Bones” Jones took another step closer to his goal of being the light heavyweight champion after overwhelming a quality opponent in Brandon Vera. Jones dominated Vera the entire fight, despite taking an illegal up-kick to the jaw early in contest. After controlling him on the ground, Jon threw a vicious elbow that caught Vera just under his eye and ended the fight shortly thereafter. Jon’s relatively easy dismantling of a very skilled and talented fighter in Vera likely puts him two fights away from a title shot. Congrats to both Jon and Ryan Ciotoli of the Bombsquad. A great day for those guys and for New York mma!

UFC 109 Claims Another New York Victim-Rolles Gracie Cut

In what had become a tough event for New York fighters, UFC 109 claims another victim from the Empire State as the UFC cuts Rolles Gracie. Though he fought only once, the UFC apparently thought Rolles’ lackluster performance was poor enough to warrant a quick exit from the promotion. It should be noted that the word is that Rolles entered the fight with a broken foot which would certainly explain his struggles during the fight. This appears not to have been given much if any consideration in their decision. With Trigg and Nover, that makes three New Yorkers dropped after this one event. Cmon UFC, leave NY alone-we have enough problems in the legalization dept!
